The ferry will be powered by four Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines.

Finnish engineering company Wärtsilä is delivering dual-fuel engines to an environmentally sound ferry in Denmark.

The company has also announced the signing of a landmark long-term service agreement for an Australian power plant.

Wärtsilä is supplying the main propulsion generating sets for the 100 meters long ferry which will operate between Jutland and the island of Samsø and will carry passengers, cars and trucks.

The vessel, designed by the Danish OSK-ShipTech A/S, will be built for the Danish municipality Samsø Kommune by Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdansk, Poland.

The ferry will be powered by four Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will have extremely low emission levels.

It is the first gas fuelled ferry for a domestic route in Denmark. The vessel is scheduled to be operational in autumn 2014.

Wärtsilä has also signed a ten-year service agreement with Energy Developments Ltd (EDL) of Australia to maintain the McArthur River Mine power plant. This is Wärtsilä’s first major service agreement in the country.

The 53 MW power plant is located in Australia’s Northern Territory. It supplies power to the McArthur River zinc mine, which is owned by the international mining resources company Xstrata.

Electricity is generated by six Wärtsilä 34SG engines running on natural gas. The power plant will be fully operational by the end of 2013.

— This is a landmark agreement, says Steve Jones, General Manager, Services sales, Wärtsilä Australia.

— By providing availability guarantees for a power plant located in a remote area of Australia, we are highlighting the efficiency and reliability of the Wärtsilä equipment.

Wartsila Catamaran

WÄRTSILÄ
The Francisco has successfully passed sea trials and is ready to begin commercial operations

Finnish engineering company Wärtsilä has provided the waterjets for what is claimed to be the world’s fastest high speed ferry.

In addition to two of its axial waterjets, Wärtsilä has also supplied an advanced propulsion control system for the Francisco.

The 99-metre catamaran reached speeds of 58.1 knots (107.6 km/h) in recent trials.

The ship was built by the Australian shipyard Incat Tasmania Pty Ltd on behalf of South American operator Buquebus. It will transport both passengers and cars between Uruguay and Argentina.

According to Incat, there is no vessel afloat that can reach these speeds and that is able to carry 1,000 passengers and 150 cars.

The ferry will have an operating speed of 50 knots, and in crossing the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) at high speed, the ferry will be able to viably compete with air traffic between Uruguay and Argentina.

— The Francisco will be the largest catamaran to be operated by Buquebus, and the fastest, environmentally cleanest, and most efficient high speed ferry in the world, says Juan Carlos Lopez Mena, President at Buquebus.

It is the first fast ferry to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel.

The Wärtsilä equipment was supplied at the end of 2012, and commissioning of the vessel took place in early 2013
