Outotec to provide smelting technology for Nystar’s Port Pirie redevelopment in South Australia

Posted on 25/06/2014 by faccadmin in News

Outotec has agreed with Nyrstar, a global integrated mining and metals company, to provide Outotec® Ausmelt technology to the Port Pirie redevelopment in South Australia. Outotec will provide a technology licence, engineering, proprietary equipment and advisory services for the redevelopment of Nyrstar Port Pirie into an advanced metals recovery and refining facility. The order has been booked in Outotec’s 2014 second quarter order intake with the contract value remaining confidential.

Nystar’s Port Pirie Facility in South Australia

Nyrstar’s Port Pirie smelter has been in continuous operation since 1889, with many of the core production assets having been in service for up to 60 years. While considered the best practice at the time, these assets are no longer capable of meeting the increasingly stringent environmental and operational standards expected of a modern base metals facility. Outotec® Ausmelt technology will be used to upgrade the facility to an advanced poly-metallic processing and recovery facility capable of processing a wide range of high value, high margin raw materials with improved environmental footprint and reduced airborne metal and dust emissions. Specifically Outotec technology will replace the outdated sinter plant with a state-of-the-art oxygen enriched bath smelting furnace.

The redeveloped facility will produce the current range of metals including lead, zinc oxide, gold, silver, and copper. However, the application of Outotec’s high temperature top submerged lance (TSL) bath smelting technology will allow a wider range of raw materials to be processed. The increased furnace flexibility will allow Nyrstar Port Pirie to process a wider range of high value and high margin concentrates and residues from Nyrstar’s existing smelters.

“We are very pleased that Nyrstar has chosen Outotec’s sustainable smelting technology for their redevelopment project. It demonstrates Nyrstar’s commitment to operating a global environmentally sustainable integrated metals business”, says Robin Lindahl, head of Outotec’s Metals, Energy & Water business area.

Australian Ambassador to Finland

Australian Ambassador welcomes launch of Finland Australia Chamber of Commerce in Finland

The Australian Ambassador to Finland this week welcomed the launch of the Finland Australia Chamber of Commerce in Finland. He also invited more Finnish businesses to consider taking advantage of Australia’s low-risk corporate environment and strong connections to Asia.

“Australia’s diverse economy is set for continued expansion, with the fastest growth of any advanced economy,” said the Australian Ambassador to Finland, Mr Gerald Thomson. All this, he says, creates opportunities for Finnish businesses.

“I look forward to working with the Finland Australia Chamber of Commerce to promote deeper ties between Australia and Finland,” he said.

FACC’s newly elected and inaugural chairman, Riku Laanti, says the chamber aims to encourage trade opportunities and strengthen links between the two countries. Currently 50 to 60 subsidiaries of Finnish companies operate in Australia. In addition, more than 50 Finnish companies employ Australian agents and distributors.

Mr Thomson believes the mining sector is one example of where bilateral trade and investment benefits both countries. Here, he says, Finland and Australia have complementary strengths:  “Australian companies like Altona Mining and Dragon Mining are making significant investments in the Finnish mining industry. While Australia is an important market for Finnish mining equipment technology companies like Outotec and Metso.  I can see similar potential in other sectors, including the digital, agribusiness and medical research sectors.’’

Chief Executive of International Chamber of Commerce in Finland, Timo Vuori, stated, “FACC is an excellent initiative to strengthen Finnish business relations with these ‘unknown’ markets of Australia and New Zealand.”

Hopes for more mining ventures between Australia and Finland

FACC member Dr Alistair Cowden, Managing Director of Altona Mining which has been operating in Finland for almost ten years, hopes FACC can help create opportunities for more mining ventures between Australian and Finnish businesses. “Finland has a world-leading fiscal environment, a supportive local and national government matched with great mining skills and a strong mining heritage. It is a pleasure doing business here.”

FACC membership currently includes representatives from Australian and Finnish government entities, Australian and Finnish businesses, research organisations, universities and associations. “We hope to attract many more people who are interested in trade, research, service and investment opportunities between both countries,” said Mr Laanti. “We want to connect these people and help to set up commercial opportunities between Finnish and Australian organisations.”

Mr Laanti, managing director of RLC International Management Oy based in Helsinki, invites anyone in the Finnish-Australian business community and the Australian community in Finland to join FACC. He also hopes people interested in trade with New Zealand will also join.

The organisation’s name reflects its sister organisation in Australia which has been operating in Australia since 2002.

Anyone interested in joining FACC can contact FACC board member Paula Vasama by calling +358 (0)45 2330 996 or emailing finland@finland.com.au.

Finnish companies exploit oil shale boom

LEHTIKUVA / JARNO MELA Outotec and Neste Jacobs have signed oil shale development deals

Finnish minerals and metals technology company Outotec is collaborating with energy company Global Oil Shale Group (GOS) in the development of a concentration process for oil shale.

Technology, engineering and project management company Neste Jacobs, has also signed a deal with GOS to collaborate in oil shale processing and plant design for converting oil shale into liquid fuel and gas as well as any upgrading required for synthetic crude oil production.

Oil shale contains kerogen, a mixture of organic chemical compounds from which oil and natural gas can be manufactured. However extracting oil from oil shale is more complex than conventional oil recovery.

In both deals, the parties will initially focus on GOS’s existing oil shale resources, such as a 2.18 billion barrels oil shale project in Julia Creek, Queensland, Australia and other deposits under evaluation and acquisition elsewhere in the world including North Africa and the Middle East.

We believe that kerogen concentration has the potential to unlock significant value as well as improve the environmental performance of the oil shale industry, says Kari Knuutila, Chief Technology Officer of Outotec. Our collaboration with Global Oil Shale will complement our expertise in the energy sector.

The agreement with GOS is a significant milestone for our company and strengthens further Neste Jacobs’ already good position in the oil shale business, says Jarmo Suominen, Managing Director of Neste Jacobs.

GOS is a global energy company exclusively focused on oil shale mining and processing.

The volume of worldwide deposits of organic material in oil shales have been estimated as equivalent to about 2.8-3.3 trillion barrel of oil.

Outotec sees synergies with Scanalyse's technology

Outotec has signed an agreement to acquire Scanalyse Holdings Pty Ltd, an Australian-based software technology company, for an undisclosed price. The acquisition is expected to be completed this month.

Scanalyse, which has operations in Australia, Brazil, Chile and the United States, specialises in measurement software development.

Its condition and performance monitoring technologies and services are expected to strengthen Outotec’s life cycle services portfolio.

— There are good opportunities to multiply the business volume of grinding mill and crusher monitoring services and to further develop applications for other process equipment, for example, refractory lined vessels, says Outotec CEO Pertti Korhonen.

Scanalyse has a strong focus in research and development, with particular emphasis on algorithms and software technology.

The company has developed proprietary computer analysis of spatial laser scan data. This analysis is used for process equipment condition and performance monitoring.

Scanalyse services have gained acceptance in the minerals processing industry in Australia and other mining countries, enabling the operators to optimize their asset performance.

Scanalyse has 36 employees with sales of a few million euros in 2012. Outotec expects to significantly increase the sales of these products worldwide.
